The Bishop of Raphoe, Dr Philip Boyce, last night confirmed that a number of allegations have been received in relation to four priests in the diocese, and that the Garda has been informed.
In a statement, he said the allegations are being "processed" but he did not have the full details. "One priest is no longer in ministry and the other cases are being examined in the light of further information received," he added.
"We are endeavouring to seek further information so that all necessary steps can be taken in accordance with church guidelines."
Dr Boyce said the diocese would fully co-operate with the Garda and other agencies, "so that the full facts can be established and justice achieved for all involved".
He called on people who were abused to report to the Garda or their local health board.
He concluded by saying: "If people wish or deem it appropriate to contact me I will endeavour to assist in any way possible".
