Residents in the Cherrymount estate in Waterford yesterday called for changes to be made to the area surrounding a walkway near the housing estate following an alleged rape of a 14-year-old in the early hours of Monday.

Director of transport and infrastructure with Waterford City Council, Lar Power, said that although the local authority had plans to clear up the area, it had no plans to install CCTV or to extend the lighting on the walkway.

"We are considering the best way forward and blocking off the area is one of those options," said Mr Power.
