A High Court action in which a concert promoter, Mr Denis Desmond, and his company MCD Management Services Ltd alleged slander against a retired coroner has been settled.

The action arose from remarks made by the then coroner, Cork solicitor Mr Cornelius Riordan, at an inquest in Cork on a man who drowned in the River Lee during the Feile weekend in August 1995.

Following talks yesterday, Mr Kevin Cross SC, for Mr Riordan, read a statement saying his client was happy to state that nothing said by him during the inquest was intended to criticise or be understood by anyone to criticise either Mr Desmond or MCD Promotions Ltd, concert promoters of the highest repute. Mr Riordan regretted any hurt or embarrassment that may have been caused and had agreed to make a contribution to the ISPCC.

Mr Edward Walsh SC, for the plaintiffs, told Mr Justice Barr that the proceedings could be struck out.
