A small Co Donegal company is proudly proving the point that it is not necessary to be based in Dublin or London to be a successful publisher.
Artcam Ireland Ltd employs just four full-time staff and is based at Bridgend, at the bottom of the Inishowen peninsula, but has published one of the most popular reference books on Ireland.
The Irish Almanac and Yearbook of Facts 1999, containing 500 pages of information on the 32 counties, has just appeared in the shops.
It includes an in-depth guide to each county, statistics on every sector in society and articles from leading academics and public figures. Dr Martin Mansergh and the RUC Chief Constable, Mr Ronnie Flanagan, are among the contributors in this year's edition.
This is the third year of the almanac, which last year sold 14,000 copies - double the number sold in the first year. The company is hopeful that growth in sales will continue.
Because of the success of the almanac, Artcam has this year branched out with two new publications, The Irish Sports Almanac and The Big, Big Quizbook of Ireland.
Associate editor Ms Helen Curley said the company was setting an important example in Donegal.
"It shows that we can set up a high-tech business here on the very periphery of Europe and achieve our aim of bringing white-collar work to Inishowen," she said.
Artcam was set up by Mr Pat McArt, editor-in-chief of the Derry Journal newspaper, and Mr Donal Campbell, a local graphic designer. They imported the almanac idea from the United States, where such publications are very popular.
The Irish Almanac and Yearbook of Facts costs £8.95.
