Book, music and electronic gadget seller Amazon.com topped the list of Internet retailers last year, a consultancy reported today.
Amazon garnered generated $3.2 billion in business through its online sales, online retailing consultancy Retail Forward reported.
Ranked next was office supply store Office Depot, with $1.60 billion in sales, followed by competitors Staples at $950 million , and computer seller Gateway at $760 million in online sales.
The list contains those companies that generate at least 50 percent of their sales by dealing directly with consumers.
The consultancy said Amazon.com accounted for 22 per cent of all sales for 50 companies ranked in the 2001 study.
The study also found that eight of the top 10 ranked retailers were "multichannel," meaning they offered goods through both Internet and other venues, such as mail order and store locations, in 2001. That figure was at five in 2000, and three in 1999.
