A male ambulance driver has been killed after crashing while taking a patient to Cork University Hospital in the early hours of this morning.
The female patient he was carrying is in a critical condition in hospital after the ambulance crashed into a ditch on a road outside Cork.
A second ambulance technician who was in the ambulance is in a stable condition after hospital treatment. The accident happened at Tooreen on the main Brandon to Cork city road at 4.40am said garda.
The ambulance was taking the woman patient to Cork University Hospital when it crashed. The ambulance driver, a man in his 40s who is believed to come from west Cork, died in the intensive care unit of the Cork hospital despite medical staff working for several hours to try to save him.
Gardaí said they were investigating the cause of the accident in which no other vehicle was involved.
