For the first time a member of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service has been attacked in the precincts of an ambulance station.

Mother of two Valerie O'Neill sustained an injury above her eye when she was hit with a stone which had been thrown at her in the courtyard of Castlederg Ambulance Station in Co Tyrone.

Ms O'Neill, was putting equipment into an ambulance when she was injured just before midnight on Monday.

"I was carrying out a routine check on the ambulance just after I had come on duty. I was changing some equipment in the back of the ambulance and suddenly I was hit with a stone just above the right eye.

"I was taken to casualty in hospital but fortunately there was no serious injury to my eye although the doctor said just an inch lower and I could have lose the sight of my eye," she said.
