The title is rather clumsy and ill-chosen, but the idea itself is praiseworthy, now that fashionable Big City writing tends to blot out America's considerable regional vitality and the fact that her literature incorporates many radically different traditions. There are sections on the South, the Midwest, the Northeast and the West, and the writers themselves include Joel Chandler Harris of the Uncle Remus stories, Kate Chopin, Hamlin Garland, Finley Peter Dunne ("Mr Dooley"), Sherwood Anderson, Sarah Orne Jewett, Bret Harte, and Jack London. Notable absentees include Willa Cather, Zane Grey, Owen Lister, and of course Faulkner.
