Thailand: Thailand has responded to the violent insurgency in its Malay Muslim southern provinces with excessive force, torture and arbitrary detentions, according to Amnesty International, the human rights group.
The UK-based group yesterday accused Thai authorities of failing to conduct credible investigations into the killing of more than 1,000 people during the conflict over the past two years.
It said the residents of southern Thailand were caught between brutalities of suspected Muslim insurgent groups and "harsh or ineffective counter-measures" of Thai security forces.
They had conducted only cursory investigations, if any, into the deaths of Buddhists and Muslims in the south, Amnesty said.
The government had no immediate comment on the report. - (Financial Times service)
