Amnesty Internationalsaid today it was very concerned at the circumstances in which an anti-globalisation protester was shot dead during unrest at the G8 summit in Genoa.

The demonstrator was fatally shot on Friday during vicious street clashes in which at least 300 people were injured and more than 100 arrested.

The London-based human rights group said Italian authorities should institute a thorough review of training and deployment of law enforcement officers.

Officers should be equipped and trained to use non-lethal methods of crowd control, Amnesty said in a statement.

"The criminal investigation into the shooting should pay special heed to international standards relating to the use of force and firearms by law enforcement officials", the statement said.

Amnesty was also concerned about allegations of indiscriminate assaults by police on nonviolent protesters, journalists and people unconnected with the demonstrations.

Amnesty said it was greatly disturbed by reports that during a raid by police on the headquarters of the Genoa Social Forum, an umbrella protest group, officers subjected individuals to deliberate and gratuitous beatings.

"The allegations of gratuitous violence and violations of detainees' rights by law enforcement officials must be investigated promptly, thoroughly and impartially", the Amnesty statement said.
