A vote on whether the name of the Kerry town of An Daingean should be changed to a bi-lingual form to include the English translation, Dingle, is to be held following a decision by  Kerry County Council this evening.

The vote will be held under the 1946 Local Government Act which permits just those living in the townland of An Daingean, approximately one third of the town's electorate, to cast a ballot.

Earlier this year, the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Eamon Ó Cuív, ruled out allowing the name Dingle to appear on maps, road signs, statutory instruments and official correspondence instead of the new official Irish version, An Daingean.

Public representatives in west Kerry sought a derogation to allow the anglicised version to be used on signposts and maps outside the Gaeltacht, arguing that the anglicised Dingle was an international tourism brand name and one easily recognised by tourists.
