Persistent industrial disputes and low delivery figures in An Post show the company is in need of urgent restructuring, according to Labour's communications spokesman, Mr Tommy Broughan.
He said unofficial disputes were continuing throughout the postal services and appealed for urgent negotiations to end industrial action which is currently affecting mail deliveries in Drogheda and Tuam.
He claimed ultimate responsibility for the strife rested with the Minster for Communications, Mr Ahern and called on him to implement the Transformation Agreement to save jobs and prevent further embarrassment at An Post.
The communications industry's watchdog, Comreg, yesterday released statistics showing only 71 per cent of mail was being delivered by the following day.
Mr Broughan said: "In recent times An Post has been characterised by industrial disputes, impending job losses, and a series of boardroom and management failures that have resulted in the late delivery of mail.
The image of the company has been further damaged by a survey from the Communications Regulator showing An Post is delivering lass than three quarters of its mail within the 24 hour target set by the regulator."
