Dublin Corporation's decision to grant planning permission for a 23-storey tower on a site on the west side of the Smithfield market, part of the Historic Area Rejuvenation Project (HARP) area, has been criticised by An Taisce, writes Tim O'Brien. Citing reasons of scale, mass, height and excessively high density, An Taisce claimed the development is in breach of the corporation's own plans for the redevelopment of the city and the HARP area.

According to Mr James Kelly, an architect and member of the Dublin City branch of An Taisce, the development would be unduly obtrusive.

Mr Kelly, who confirmed An Taisce would be appealing the permission to An Bord Pleanala, claimed the corporation was now, "as a matter of policy contravening its own development plan".
