GAA:Val Andrews and Terry Hyland were confirmed as the new Cavan senior football management team after they were unanimously ratified at a specially convened county committee meeting last night.
“Val Andrews and Terry Hyland were ratified as the Cavan senior management team for a three year term with a review after two years. This was a unanimous decision by the clubs of Cavan following a recommendation from the management committee of Cavan county board earlier in the week,” the statement read.
“This appointment is with immediate effect. The chairman, officers and clubs of Cavan wish Val and Terry every success during their term.”
Andrews and Hyland face a difficult task to rejuvenate the county’s footballing fortunes after a largely unsuccessful spell under previous manager Tommy Carr.
It is Andrews’ second spell in charge, having previously managed the county from 1998-2001. Hyland was one of Andrews’ selectors during that spell.
The Breffni county were beaten by Fermanagh in the quarter-final of this year’s Ulster Championship. They narrowly overcame Wicklow in the first round of the qualifiers before losing heavily (1-19 to 0-04) against All-Ireland finalists Cork in the second round of the qualifiers.
Together with Down, Cavan are the most successful county from Ulster in terms of All-Ireland victories with five in total, but the last of those came in 1952.
Cavan have endured a largely barren spell since then with their last provincial success coming in 1997.
