Campaigners aiming to spread an anti-racist message to GAA fans prior to yesterday's All-Ireland football final saw their efforts stifled by threats of littering fines.

"Show Racism the Red Card" volunteers were aiming to distribute 25,000 postcards around Dublin before yesterday's match. However, they were warned by litter wardens from Dublin City Council that the charity would be fined €125 for each postcard found discarded.

"It is unfortunate that the city council has taken this attitude. We contacted the gardaí and were assured that our activity could go ahead without interference because we were not trading," campaign co-ordinator Garrett Mullan said.

The team of volunteers managed to distribute 5,000 postcards, which the organisation hopes will bring an anti-racist message to workplaces and sports clubs across the country.
