A group of anti-war protesters held a demonstration outside the American Embassy in Dublin this evening. Protesters called for an end to US military strikes in Afghanistan and for peaceful negotiations to begin.

The newly formed anti-war group called for a "proper, independent, international investigation" into the "appalling" events of September 11th.

Mr Richard Boyd Barrett, the group's spokesman, warned it had not been proven that Osama Bin Laden was responsible for the US attacks yet and said Sky News and CNN reports were insufficient evidence of his guilt.

He also criticised the Government’s decision to offer the use of Irish airports to US forces.

He said the Government had "no right to allow the US use our facilities" and said it had failed to consult either the Dáil or the Irish people before making the offer to the United States.

About 100 members of the group, established since the September 11th attacks, joined Mr Boyd Barrett outside the US embassy chanting anti-war slogans.

The group has already held meetings in Galway, Cork and Belfast and Mr Boyd Barrett said, intends to build a mass anti-war movement throughout the country.

"This war is unacceptable and must be stopped", he said.
