A midlands bar will today discover if its programme of Christmas entertainment will be disrupted, after people living upstairs objected to the sound levels from the premises.

River S, which backs on to the Shannon river in Athlone, recently entered into an agreement with people living in the apartment block over the pub.

However, Mr Colm McCormack, a resident, told Athlone District Court yesterday the pub had breached the agreement by advertising five music sessions. He said the agreement was for three. Mr McCormack said his elderly mother can't sleep at night due to the booming music. She was taking sleeping tablets, he added.

Mr Tim Broderick, proprietor of River S, said he had taken steps to reduce the noise in the premises. One of the five sessions advertised was a traditional music session without amplification, and another was a Sunday afternoon session featuring one man playing a guitar.
