An Bord Pleanála has been urged to hold an oral hearing into the decision by South Dublin County Council to grant planning permission for a four-storey apartment block in the grounds of the former home of Ireland's first president, W. T. Cosgrave.

Residents in the vicinity of the Cosgrave home at Scholarstown Road, Knocklyon, Dublin, have made the plea in appeals lodged against the local authority's decision. Permission was given for the development to Caldercrest Ltd in May but now An Bord Pleanála has confirmed it has received seven valid appeals against the decision.

"It would be a terrible shame to see such an inappropriate building put beside a protected building, especially when it is totally out of keeping with the residential property in the neighbourhood," said Mr David Harrison, who lives on Scholarstown Road.

In his appeal, he claimed the land being retained by Rosmor House would be greatly reduced, which he said would significantly change the character of the house.
