An appeal has been lodged in the Court of Criminal Appeal by a man who was jailed earlier this month for four years for killing student Brian Murphy outside Dublin's Burlington Hotel in August 2000. The appeal is against conviction and sentence.

Dermot Laide (22), of Rossvale, Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, also received a concurrent two-year term after he was also found guilty of violent disorder surrounding the death of the 18-year-old, who was kicked and beaten to death after he had attended Club Anabel.

Laide was one of three people given jail sentences following the incident involving Brian Murphy and all three have now lodged appeals. It is not known yet when the appeals will be heard but they are unlikely to come before the appeal court before June at the earliest, as the court list is heavy.

Seán Mackey (23), of South Park, Foxrock, Dublin, was jailed for two years after he was also convicted of violent disorder, while Desmond Ryan (23), of Cunningham Road, Dalkey, Dublin, was jailed for nine months for violent disorder.

When imposing sentence in the Circuit Court, Judge Michael White said he would defer issuing the warrant against Ryan until May 31st because he had received a letter from the Agriculture Department of UCD to say that Ryan was in the middle of his final examinations.
