Gardaí have appealed to the public for information on the death of a man whose body was found in a ditch in Dublin on Thursday.

The man, named as Peter Gunne (29) was found in a ditch at Dunsoghly Lane close to the N2 on Thursday night. The body had been dumped on the side of Dunsoghly Lane, a minor roadway in the Ward leading to Finglas and close to the Brock Inn pub.

Gardai said today that Mr Gunne's body may have been there for a week.

A post-mortem examination concluded that father-of-two Peter Gunn from Dublin was stabbed to death.

Gardai had already launched a missing person investigation after he disappeared on January 4, but today they
confirmed the body found on Thursday was that of Mr Gunn.

The murdered man was last seen at the junction of Parnell St and Summerhill in Dublin inner city when he was with a group of people, but he is understood to have left the area, possibly in a taxi.

Investigators are trying to trace his final movements and have yet to establish a clear motive for the murder.

Today Superintendent John Gilligan appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

"We would appeal for the people who were with him to come forward to help us," he said.

"It is also possible a taxi driver may remember seeing Peter." Mr Gunn is described as being approximately 6ft 2ins tall, of medium build, with short dark hair.

When last seen, he was wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, a cream t-shirt and white runners.

The Superintendent added: " There are people who know what happened to him and we would appeal for them to come forward."
