A visit to Chernobyl last month by 103FM County Sound reporter Patricia Messenger has prompted a joint effort on behalf of the stricken children of that region by the station and the Glanworth Project in north Cork.

Ms Messenger's description of a dying child who was in so much pain that its mother couldn't hold it was the catalyst.

In an appeal to the people of the region, parents have been asked to collect old toys, which will be sold to finance the purchase of much-needed drugs for the Chernobyl children, many of whom will not live to see another Christmas.

"We are giving to some children the gift of a peaceful and pain-free death," said Mr Emelyn Heaps, one of the organisers.
