A judge ruled yesterday that an appeal by a man jailed for life for a school flame thrower attack will go ahead next Friday whether or not he is fit to be present.

Garnet Bell (47) was taken to Belfast City Hospital last week from Maghaberry Prison where he is serving a life sentence for the attempted murder of three students at his old school, Sullivan Upper, Holywood, Co Down.

Barrister Mr Paddy O'Hanlon told the Court of Appeal that Bell was suffering from a serious illness and his doctors believed healing would be a slow process.

Lord Justice Carswell said the appeal would be listed for next Friday.
