Repairs to the roof of the National Aquatic Centre are to begin tomorrow, more than 10 weeks after the storm that caused over €1 million damage to the building.

The centre's landlord, State company Campus and Stadium Ireland Development (CSID), said it will not know until Wednesday how long the repairs will take. However, it originally gave an estimate of three months.

The centre's management company, Dublin Waterworld Ltd, has been publicly critical of the delay in starting repairs.

"It took 22 months to complete the whole building, and it could be six months since the storm before it's open again," Waterworld director Liam Bohan said.

The company has laid off 60 staff and had to cancel major international competitions.

Mr Bohan claims Waterworld has been "left out of the loop" by CSID.

However, CSID director Donagh Morgan said he has been in regular contact with the centre.

"We have been keeping them very seriously in the loop. We had a meeting with staff just over a week ago and we've been giving all the information that we can."

Two separate engineers' reports were commissioned into how the roof of the competition pool failed to withstand the high winds on New Year's Day. These had to be studied in detail before the repairs could begin, Mr Morgan said.

The reports could not currently be published, he said, as they contained technical details relating to the repairs.
