A man from the Aran Islands has been remanded in custody following a special court sitting in Galway city yesterday in connection with an assault on a Garda sergeant on Inis Mór in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Seán McDonagh (28), Cill Éinne Road, Inis Mór, made no reply when charged with assaulting Sgt Christy Joyce causing him harm at Joe Watty's pub, Kilronan, Inis Mór, on December 28th last. He is further charged with breaching the peace on the same occasion.
Mr McDonagh was arrested on the island at 5.30am on Thursday and was held in custody at Salthill Garda station overnight before being brought before the special court sitting in Galway city yesterday.
Judge Gerard Furlong remanded him in custody to Castlerea Prison to appear before Harristown District Court on Friday, January 5th, following an objection to bail by Insp Tony O'Donnell.Six extra gardaí from Salthill, Galway, were drafted on to the island following the disturbance while Sgt Joyce was taken to University College Hospital Galway, suffering from a broken nose.
