A Dublin councillor has claimed that the owners of some amusement arcades in the city are giving children soft drinks, "tea and sandwiches" in an effort to keep them on their premises. Mr Christy Burke (SF), was speaking at a recent meeting of the council's finance committee at which councillors were told by the city treasurer, Mr Michael Redmond, that the city's law agent had expressed the view that current legislation governing arcades, the Gaming and Lotteries Act of 1956, was "outdated and needing reform". Committee members were discussing letters on the issue from the Garda Commissioner and Focus Ireland, the charity which deals with homeless young people.
