London - The former deputy chairman of the Conservative Party, Lord Archer, was remanded on bail for six weeks yesterday on charges of perjury and perverting the course of justice in connection with claims that he asked a friend to lie for him in the run-up to a libel case in 1987, Rachel Donnelly reports.
Lord Archer appeared at Bow Street Magistrates' Court in London to face two charges of perjury, two of perverting the course of justice and one of using a false instrument. That charge relates to diaries he used in his libel action against the Daily Star, which accused him of sleeping with the prostitute Ms Monica Coghlan.
