More than 600 architects are in the race to design a new visitor centre for the Giant's Causeway, it was revealed today.
With the authorities attempting to unlock millions of pounds for Northern Ireland's economy, experts from around the world have declared an interest.
Ever since the old facilities were destroyed by fire five years ago, tourism chiefs have been under pressure to build a replacement fitting for the jewel in the north Antrim coast.
An international jury has been appointed to select a plan that combines education and entertainment without threatening the natural beauty of the location. All designs must be submitted by August 5th, with the winner announced in the autumn.
Tourism Minister Angela Smith predicted whoever came out on top could help put Northern Ireland firmly on the map.
She disclosed: "Since asking for expressions of interest in this project in mid March, we have been delighted at the level of response from architects around the world.
"More than 600 architects from as far afield as Japan and Australia have indicated their interest in submitting designs."
The authorities have committed £11.5 million for the scheme, and wants to attract another source of funding to share the costs.
