A precautionary notice from Arklow Town Council telling householders to boil tap water in the aftermath of last week's flooding is expected to be lifted today after a series of tests proved the water is safe for consumption.
However, Green Party councillor Deirdre De Búrca said that she had received a number of calls from residents who claimed to have become ill after drinking water.
Town clerk Des Nichols said that, while his office had received similar reports, all their tests had shown the water to be clear.
Acting on advice from the Heath Service Executive, Mr Nichols said that the notice had been brought into effect after fears that the town's reservoir at Ballyduff might have become "muddied" due to the flooding.
A number of water samples have been tested at seven centres in the town since Thursday of last week. The most recent samples were examined for traces of cryptosporidium, but the test proved negative.
