All-Ireland champions Armagh lost their unbeaten league record today after going down by two points to Tyrone in Omagh.
Joe Kernan's side, whose last defeat in league or championship was in April of last year, maintain their position at the top of division 1A but their advantage has been slashed to two points with four teams now hovering behind on six.
Reigning league champions Tyrone based their victory on a firey first-half display. Owen Mulligan put his side in the driving seat with a goal after 17 minutes following good work from Peter Canavan.
The home side, who led by a point at the break, defended resolutely in the second period and edged into a three point lead after some fine shooting by Canavan and a smart brace from Enda McGinley.
Forward Oisin McConville scored two frees for Armagh but their other attackers were kept at bay by some purposeful Tyrone defending.
Tyrone themselves failed to score in the final 25 minutes but released Armagh's stranglehold on the competition by holding out for a deserved victory.
Meanwhile, in the National Hurling League, Kilkenny ran out five point winners over Galway at Nowlan Park.
Conor Hayes' Galway started eagerly and, with the aid of a stiff breeze, raced into a 0-6 to 0-2 lead after 20 minutes.
But after a frantic start, the game settled to an even pace and with that Kilkenny found their form. Tommy Walsh slotted over three confident points to haul the Cats back into the game.
Galway led 0-9 to 0-8 at the break.
The visitors started the second half with a Kevin Broderick goal but failed to capitalise on that score and allowed Kilkenny peg them back.
Brian Cody's side outpointed their opponents in the second-half and Jimmy Coogan stamped his authority on the game with seven points - five from frees.
The victory sees Kilkenny join Clare on four points at the top of Division 1A. Clare beat Dublin by seven points at Parnell Park.
