The army in Cork has urged members of the public to alert gardai or the Army bomb disposal unit in the event of discovering any type of unused armaments, writes Dick Hogan. The warning follows the discovery of a number of unused shells and grenades in the Munster area over the past few weeks.
On Sunday, January 23rd, weapons believed to belong to the Continuity IRA were intercepted by gardai and later destroyed by the Army. The Army bomb disposal unit was again called out last Thursday, when a hand grenade was found on the banks of the River Shannon near Barrington's Hospital, where construction work is in progress.
Last weekend, the bomb disposal unit was called out twice in Cork to deal with two shells which were found in separate locations. Both devices were destroyed.
