Extra armed gardaí have been drafted into Limerick amid fears of reprisal attacks for two shootings on the north side of the city on Tuesday night.
Gardaí from Cork were sent to Limerick yesterday to help maintain a 24-hour armed Garda presence on the streets of some of the city's housing estates.
The deployment of extra resources to Limerick comes after a night of separate shootings which took place in the St Mary's Park and Moyross areas.
Seánie Keane, a brother of murdered crime boss Kieran Keane and jailed drug dealer Christy Keane, was shot at four times at his home on Oliver Plunkett Street in St Mary's Park at 7.20pm on Tuesday.
Two hours later three men suffered minor pellet wounds in a drive-by shooting outside a house in Delmege Park, Moyross. This was unrelated to the earlier shooting.
In the first shooting a man armed with a handgun and wearing a balaclava opened fire on Mr Keane when he opened his front door.
Mr Keane suffered three gunshot wounds to his arm and back, and is recovering at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital, where his condition is described as stable.
In the second shooting a gunman stepped from a car and fired into a crowd of people, discharging at least one shot from what appears to have been a sawn-off shotgun.
Five men who were outside the house in Moyross dived for cover, but three were struck with pellets. One needed hospital treatment for minor injuries.
This shooting is related to a feud in the Moyross area between associates of the late Eddie Ryan and a rival gang.
A number of people arrested in relation to the shooting were still being questioned last night at Mayorstone Garda station in Limerick.
