A lone armed raider made off with what gardaí described as a "small amount" of cash after a robbery at a credit union in Carlow.

The man, who was said to be heavily disguised, entered the Carlow Credit Union at around 9.55 am as it was opening for business.

He threatened staff with a handgun, forcing them to hand over the cash before escaping on foot. There were no customers in the building, and no injuries were reported.

A Garda spokesman said it was believed the robbery may be connected with drugs activity in the town.
