Two masked men with a sawn-off shotgun escaped with an undisclosed quantity of cash after they held up a security van in north County Dublin this afternoon.

The raid took place in the grounds of St Ita's hospital, Portrane, shortly after 10.30 a.m.

The raiders held up the security staff as they entered the foyer of the hospital and stole three money bags.

They then made their getaway in a 98 W registered blue Mitsubishi Carisma driven by a third man. This car was later found close to a beach near Donabate.
