Johannesburg - As the campaign for the election on June 2nd begins to intensify, South Africans have been reminded by the discovery of a huge cache of arms of how perilously close they were to civil war in the run-up to the last election, Patrick Laurence reports.

The cache, described as "large enough to launch a full-scale war", was discovered largely on the initiative of the new Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Bulelani Ngcuka, a former African National Congress parliamentary representative.

The discovery was made after Mr Ngcuka persuaded the regional leader of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Mr Phillip Powell, to disclose the whereabouts of the cache.
