Army bomb disposal experts were called in to defuse two second World War grenades in Co Wicklow yesterday after the discovery by roadworkers.

A spokesman for the Defence Forces said the Army team was called in after two suspicious objects were dug up just outside Ashford town.

Workers on the N11 Dublin to Wexford route came across the devices and alerted gardaí who called in the Army. The Defence Forces spokesman said: "They found two Mills 36 grenades, old World War II vintage grenades, so they removed them from the scene and transported them to Kilbride Military Range in Co Wicklow. They were transported in a special container in the bomb-disposal truck."

A Garda spokesman said the area was cordoned off for one to two hours but traffic was not affected. - (PA)
