An Irish-registered Spanish fishing vessel that was arrested by the Irish Naval Service last night off the west coast is due to arrive in Castlebere, Co Cork, this afternoon.

The arrest of the Dinishtook place 30 nautical miles off Loop Head, Co Clare, following what a spokesman for the Department of Defence said was a "routine boarding" by the Le Aisling.

According to the spokesman, the ship was detained after the crew failed to provide safe means for an inspection team from the Le Aislingto board the ship.

One of Le Aisling'screw members was slightly injured while boarding the vessel.

This is the second detention of a vessel in three days. A British fishing vessel, the Solstice II, was held about 30 nautical miles north west of Achill Island, Co Mayo, on Monday for alleged quota and logbook infringements.

Five detentions have been made by the Naval Service so far this year.
