The RUC in Derry believes that there were sectarian motives behind two overnight fires in houses occupied by Catholics the Waterside area yesterday.
The fires in the loyalist Clooney Estate caused slight damage. Shortly after midnight, a woman in one of the heard the sound of breaking glass and found curtains and a door on fire downstairs. Neighbours helped to put out the fire. The second fire was discovered at 6.30 a.m. when curtains and a window sill in a nearby house were deliberately set alight.
A Catholic girls' school in north Belfast was targeted in an arson attack early yesterday. Part of a bus, curtains and chairs were damaged in the fire at Mercy primary school on the Crumlin Road.
