The man convicted of the arson attack on Tallaght Garda Station in 1999, which led to the death of a Garda sergeant, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Daniel O’Toole (37) a security officer of Cashel Avenue, Crumlin, in Dublin had pleaded not guilty to a charge of arson with intent to endanger property.

A jury in the Central Criminal Court unanimously convicted O’Toole of arson last month but failed to agree verdicts on two other charges - the capital murder of Sgt Andrew Callanan, acting in the course of his duties, or the simple charge of murder of Sgt Callanan.

Shortly after 4 a.m. on July 21st, 1999, O'Toole walked into Tallaght Garda station and poured petrol around the public area. He then set it alight. Sgt Callanan died in the fire that followed.
