In May 1999, ten Irish artists visited Israel under the auspices of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Jewish National Fund. The work they made on the basis of their trip was exhibited briefly last year in Dublin Castle, and now a longer showing has been arranged at the Davis Gallery in Capel Street.
Gerald Davis himself was, of course, among the artists. "What has stayed with me is the battle they have for water . . ." he remarked, and most of his companions were likewise much struck by the arid, harshly beautiful landscape, baked by a hot, merciless sun. Jacqueline Stanley, Carey Clarke, Campbell Bruce and Bernadette Madden all produced evocative landscape studies as did Martin Gale whose striking account of "one of the world's major crossroads" is a highlight.
