The yacht Asgard, once utilised to run guns between Belfast and the port of Howth, Co Dublin, was today moved from the former Kilmainham Jail, where it has been for more than 20 years, to the headquarters of the Royal Dublin Society, to go on exhibition at the annual Dublin boat show.
The transfer was organised by the Asgard Restoration Project, which wants to put the craft back into its original condition and launch it again in a IR£850,000 two-year project.
The Asgard was used for gun-running in 1914 by Erskine Childers, author of the novel The Riddle of The Sands, and the father of a future President of Ireland, also named Erskine Childers.
