A sharply divided US senate is expected to confirm the controversial appointment of Mr John Ashcroft as attorney general, despite an overwhelming majority of Democrats ready to vote against.
A top Democrat aide said at least 42 of the chamber's 50 Democrats were set to vote against President George W. Bush's most controversial Cabinet nominee who opponents say is too conservative for the job.
All 50 Senate Republicans, along with at least six Democrats, are said to be supporting Mr Ashcroft’s nomination, assuring he will become the nation's top law enforcement officer.
The Senate confirmation vote will underscore the division in the Senate and also send mixed messages to the new president.
Senate Republicans see the vote as a signal to Mr Bush that they can deliver the votes he needs in support of his policies, while Democrats regards this a warning to the new president.
The result of the vote is expected at around 7 p.m. this evening.
