With most of the votes counted the margin is narrow, with between 52 and 55 per cent of ASTI members that voted rejecting the proposals.

The ballot also asked if ASTI members wish the ban on examination supervision to be reinstated. This was rejected in the vote, meaning that the exams will take place with ASTI co-operation.

Checking of votes began yesterday at the union’s headquarters in Dublin, and the count began this afternoon.

An ASTI spokeswoman said that there was a turnout of over 70 per cent of the 17,000 ASTI members for the vote.

In what had been considered to be a gauge of the sentiment within the union, delegates at the ASTI conference in Galway a fortnight ago voted against the proposals by 312 to 96 with nine abstentions.

The secondary teachers have been seeking a 30 per cent pay rise.
