Budding astronomers will tonight get the chance to see the solar system's biggest planet in the skies over Ireland.

Jupiter will be aligned with the Moon and the brightest star in the constellation Scorpius, and Astronomy Ireland is setting up massive telescopes around the country for free public viewings.

A spokesman said: "Just after sunset tonight, everyone in Ireland will be treated to a rare celestial alignment involving the Moon, the planet Jupiter and the brightest star in the constellation Scorpius, known as Antares.

"All three are grouped very close together, and will be visible with the naked eye across Ireland. Members of the public can get once-in-a-lifetime views of the Solar System's largest planet," he said.
