Elsewhere, gunmen opened fire on a bus carrying civilians north of Baghdad today, killing five and wounding four, police said.

The attack took place in the town of Baquba, some 65 km (40 miles) north of Baghdad.

Ethnically mixed Baquba has been hit several times by sectarian violence.

Gunmen have also killed seven labourers working in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.

A police official said he suspected they were killed because they worked for the police department.
