At least four people - including an alleged bomber - were killed and another 23 injured when a bomb exploded in a busy area of west-central Bogota today.

The explosion hit an area near El Campin football stadium in this city which in July will play host to several Copa America football matches.

The blast also hit near the state's National University and the Geological Research Institute, known as Ingeominas, on busy Ciudad de Quito avenue, damaging several office and apartment buildings.

Bogota police chief General Jorge Linares said it was unclear who might be behind the blast.

"We have a serious terrorism problem," Gen Linares conceded, "but at the moment we cannot say who is behind these acts."

National Police, service and army staff combed the area for additional explosive devices and discovered two more bombs, a police spokesman said. A second, smaller bomb went off, causing no injuries, and a third bomb was discovered and deactivated by authorities without incident.
