London - An attempt to break the transatlantic rowing record speed record was scuppered after the 16-member crew mutinied. The 10-tonne Atlantic Endeavour left the Canary Islands on November 1st in an attempt to beat the 35-day, eight-hour record set in 1992 by a French rowing team. But the crew jumped ship during an unscheduled stop to repair a generator at the Cape Verde Islands.

The first sign of discontent came in e-mails to the crew's London headquarters when members complained of problems with the communications system and heavy seas.
