A man accused of attacking an elderly woman and possessing a blood filled syringe has been refused District Court jurisdiction.

Mr James Kavanagh (35), of Meath Place, Dublin, appeared in Dublin District Court yesterday charged with two counts of robbery, possession of a syringe as an offensive weapon and unauthorised use of a vehicle in Sandymount on July 19th last. Garda Jim Madden said the defendant had parked a stolen Volkswagen nearby jumping on an 84 year old woman, knocking her to the ground and stealing her bag containing £75 worth of goods.

He then produced a blood filled syringe when two men came to the woman's assistance and ran off into Sandymount village where he took a bike from a woman cycling by, said Garda Madden.

Judge William Earley said he was refusing jurisdiction in all charges and remanded Mr Kavanagh on bail to March 24th.
