Attack on Co Down train driver condemned

A train driver has been injured after a being hit by a brick in Co Down.

A train driver has been injured after a being hit by a brick in Co Down.

The brick was thrown through the window of his train on the Bangor to Belfast line at about 8.30 p.m. last night. The driver was taken to Belfast City Hospital with extensive cuts to his face.

In a separate incident, two people were injured in Co Derry when children broke windows in a passing train.

The attack on the train driver was condemned today by the North’s Development Minister Mr Peter Robinson of the DUP.

He said the safety implications of the incident were "horrendous".

"Regretfully, this is not a one-off incident.

"If attacks of this nature continue, it is only a matter of time before we have a major catastrophe resulting in a serious loss of life. The whole community has a responsibility to protect those who provide our essential services such as public transport."
