Turkish police have detained a man whose home-made bomb blew up in his hands near an Istanbul police station.

Turkish police have detained a man whose home-made bomb blew up in his hands near an Istanbul police station.

The state-run Anatolian news agency says a loud explosion was heard near the police station overnight. When police arrived at the scene they found three fingertips.

A 21-year-old man was arrested and taken to hospital. The news agency says the man said a bomb had blown up in his hands.

He had lost some fingers, suffered neck injuries and lost a significant amount of blood.

Istanbul has been the target of a series of bombs in recent months. Four suicide bombings of Jewish and British targets in November killed 61 people.

Last week a blast killed one bomber and a waiter working at a restaurant at an Istanbul Masonic lodge.
