An investigation has begun into the attempted theft of a cash dispenser in Co Kilkenny early this morning.

A stolen tractor was used to ram a wall housing an ATM at AIB on Green Street Callan at around 3.30 a.m.

At least two people fled the scene when the attempt to dislodge the ATM failed.

This morning's attempt is the latest in a spate of robberies targeting ATMs.

A similar attempt on an ATM 53 miles away in Rosslare, Co Wexford, was successful last month when raiders escaped with an estimated €140,000.
